Murramarang Community Garden acknowledges the traditional tribes and clans of the Murramarang People, custodians of the land on which the Garden is located.
Murramarang Community Garden Inc. The Murramarang Community Garden was inaugurated at a public meeting held in 2010, with construction commencing in 2011 - it is a shared garden for people from Kioloa, Bawley Point and Termeil. Bordered by Murramarang National Park the garden has a large site on the ANU Kioloa Coastal Campus at Kioloa, irrigated by dam water and in full sun. Regular Saturday morning working bees have resulted in the construction of over 60 garden plots, a large storage shed and compost bays, with fig, citrus, blueberry orchards.
The MCG has a childrens play area and younger members of our community are encouraged to participate in our community garden activities. Older people and people with limited mobility are especially welcome – some garden plots are constructed to a height suitable for people in wheelchairs at no extra cost and the space between beds can accommodate wheelchair access. Life Without Barriers (LWB), an Ulladulla organisation providing services to adults with intellectual disabilities, began visiting our garden in 2014 - LWB clients enjoy picking (and eating) produce and spending time in a tranquil outdoor setting. In 2015 Davenport Cottage replaced LWB as the provider, although the clients have remained much the same. Our communal area has expanded greatly over the past 11 years, with hazelnuts, citrus, blueberry, raspberries, banana, feijoa, persimmon, rhubarb, asparagus, pomegranate and many seasonal crops such as beans, peas, potatoes, broad beans and garlic growing well. We also have three productive bee hives, thanks to local Beekeeper, Col Keating. An extension of our irrigation system was undertaken in September 2017, enabling taps and hoses to be located in our communal area - a big improvement, enabling easy watering of crops - no more lugging heavy hoses over the fence. A further expansion of our irrigation system in March 2018 resulted in the location of more taps and lightweight hoses adjacent to plots in the inner garden area. Many local people have joined for a fee of $10 a year. As we near the commencement of our second decade we reflect on the rapid growth of MCG, due to the great community effort of all those who have built fences, garden beds and sheds, planted the wind break, carted soil and compost and kept the weeds at bay. There are several garden plots currently available for rental. Come along and join us if you want to learn more about gardening from others, and share what you know. We were successful in winning a grant of $4400 from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust in 2011 to fund the establishment of the garden and since then we have won grants totalling over $11000 from other funding sources, such as Clubs NSW and SCC. In 2021, we were awarded another grant from Veolia Mulwaree Trust for $4000, entitled the "Mow-bility" Project. In November 2022 we were again successful in a grant application to the Veolia Mulwaree Trust for $5000 for our "Raising Communal Plots" project. Most importantly, we thank ANU for providing the site for the garden, fencing and our shipping container for storage. Steve Teding van Berkhout, the now retired ANU KCC Manager, oversaw the establishment and development of MCG, offering helpful advice and encouragement. We have now developed a good working relationship with the the new ANU Site Manager, Shane Paul who has helped us to improve access to our site.
