Pruning Lavender
In two quick steps we will show you how to trim your lavender shrubs to avoid overgrowth.
Lavender can grow out of control unless it is forced into submission! However, this can be a fun and easy job and should be carried out twice a year - once lightly after flowering and again later to neaten summer's growth.
Lavender is best grown in neatly clipped hedges, in pots, in a herb circle or courtyard. Coastal gardens, rocky slopes and planter boxes are all good environments for lavender. Group with other Mediterranean plants - its soft silver looks beautiful with rosemary, sage, rock rose and scented geraniums.
Growing tips for lavender
1. Don't over-crowd lavender with too many plants as this leads to poor air circulation - when planting a hedge, allow for room between each plant
2. If lavender dies back, spray section by section with fungicide.
3. Lavender dislikes being moved; it's easier to grow a new plant than to move an old one.
4. Water in fertiliser around the roots once a year to keep your lavender's pH in check.
5. Lavender plants last for up to five years; after this time, replace them.
